    Addressing tips for Japan

    • Japanese postcodes have seven digits with a hyphen between the third and fourth digits, such as 951-8073.[1]
    • Japan Post's UPU sheet says automatic sorting equipment can sort addresses in kanji, hiragana or katakana; Roman-script addresses are sorted manually.[1]
    • Japanese addresses usually move from the largest geographical area to the smallest, with prefecture, city or ward, chome, block and building details.[1]
    • Street names are generally not used; chome, ban and go identify zones, blocks and houses, and apartment numbers may be needed for buildings.[1]

Questions about sending mail to Japan

How long does mail to Japan take?
We estimate 8–15 business days after mailing. It is an estimate, not a guaranteed delivery date, and the count starts on the day we mail your letter, not the day you order.
Can I send a letter to Japan from another country?
Yes. You order online from wherever you are, and we print and mail the letter for you, so you don't need stamps or a trip to the post office. Once your order is assigned, its page shows the country it was mailed from.
Can I add a return receipt to a letter to Japan?
Yes. Choose Registered letter and add the return receipt. The recipient signs on delivery and the signed receipt is posted back to the sender address on your letter. A sender address is required.
Can I track a letter to Japan?
Yes, with a tracked or registered letter. Tracking updates depend on the postal networks along the way, so they may not cover every step. Your order page shows the updates we receive.
Do I need to enter a state or province for Japan?
Yes, the address form asks for it and we print it as part of the address. Pick the address from the suggestions to fill it in automatically.
Should I write a Japan address in Japanese or Roman letters?
Use the recipient's reliable version. Japan Post's UPU sheet says Japanese-script addresses can be sorted automatically, while Roman-script addresses are sorted manually.[1]
Where does the Japanese postcode go?
MaisonMail prints it with the postal mark before the address, using the reviewed 123-4567 format.
What do chome, ban and go mean?
The UPU glossary explains chome as an area of a neighbourhood, ban as a block and go as a building number.[1]
