Security deposit in Italy (deposito cauzionale)
A deposito cauzionale is the sum a tenant gives an Italian landlord as security, returned at the end of the tenancy less any amounts actually owed. Think of it as a refundable guarantee, not the last months’ rent. In Italy, for a residential lease it may not exceed three months’ rent and earns legal interest, payable to the tenant at the end of each year; the law sets no fixed repayment deadline, so ask for it in writing after returning the home and keys, with an itemised list of any deductions.
