Letter before action (letter before claim)
A letter before action, also called a letter before claim, sets out what you claim, why and what you want before you consider court proceedings. Think of it as the formal last step before a civil claim. In England and Wales, 14 days is normally a reasonable reply period for a straightforward case, a business claiming a debt from an individual may need the Debt Claims Protocol with at least 30 days, and the letter does not extend a limitation period; Scotland and Northern Ireland have different procedures.
